Here's a very helpful tip given to me by 'bigdog'. If you're restoring a sixty's series Chevy truck and converting from drum brakes to disc brakes, how do you do it without going to a 5-bolt front end? Here's how: The rotors off of an '88 3/4 ton Chevy pickup will slip right on those spindles you just installed. They have the exact same shaft and bearing diameter. The bolt pattern is the same as your stock 6-bolt. Even if you can't find them at a junk yard, you can buy them at Autozone.com for about $60/ea. CLICK HERE to see the product listing. If you have any questions, post them here.

I guess it all depends on how much you want to spend. If you already have disc brakes, but would like to convert to 6-bolt, this is a very affordable solution. As far as wheels go, 6-bolts are becoming more and more popular. Wheel selection is improving. This is also a great solution for those who want to go with disc brakes, but keep their original wheels. It's all about options and making them as inexpensive as possible.

I think you would want the disc's from an 88 1/2 ton. This is when GM went back to the 6 lug pattern. The 3/4 ton have been 8 lug. Hey i'm just trying to boost my posts.. ;D

You can use your existing spindles and calipers. That's what's so great about it.

Existing spindles and calipers? I wasn't aware that disc was even an option till 1971. Of course I can also remember the car magazines in 1970 stating that Chevrolet didn't offer a 454 Chevelle, yet look at all the "factory" 70 SS454 Chevelles that are sold at the BJ auction each year... I understand that a lot of folks love the junkyard scroungin' and interchangeability sleuthing, but the companies that offer complete kits of brand-new stuff are not overpriced....

By "existing" I meant your existing 5-bolt disc brake setup.

I have a set of the 3/4 ton 6 bolt rotors. Yes they do exist and have the same bearings seals as a half ton and will go right on your 5 bolt disc brake spiindles. Franks Auto Parts in A.J. actually gave me this tip. After market brakes are great and they will stop your truck. They are usually made up out of Chevelle SMALL rotor brake parts and charge an extra $100 if you want six bolt. K members for 5 bolt are around in the 50 to 200 range. You can swap out the whole thing pretty quick. But if you want the rear end to be 5 bolt be prepared to swap out perches for the axle. 5 and Six Bolt NEW take off wheels are all over Craigslist with tires Cheap. Yes, I have bought whole brake kits and installed them. The parts are all clean, shiny and new. But I like get a bargain and make my limited truck money go further. But if you really want the ultimate Rack and Pinion, full air drop, that will lay Frame, K member, that runs Corvette suspension and brakes, see Nathan Porter at Porterbuilt in Mesa, Az. www.Portertbuilt.com They Build the really Awsome stuff so don't be shy with just a brake conversion, go full fish and get his front end. There is a place for everybody in the truck world it just depends on your money/time/creativity. If I had infinite cash I would just go to the big car auction and write the check. But then If I had infinite cash, I would just go Vegas get the high roller suite, six hookers, a live band and have 4 Paramedics standin' by to revive my old butt everytime I sieze up and wouldn't give a crap about building anything.

Right, but if you "don't" have disk brakes and you're converting over sometimes the kit can be just as or cheaper, unless you can get a donor that don't need rebuilding, I was lucky this 72 I found has a rebuilt front end just have to clean it up!..

Okay, maybe I'm missing something here.....Are there some 60-66 pickups out there ("existing") that came stock with disc brakes and five lug rotors??? or are you guys talking about "existing" parts from seventies-era trucks?

I just put a 72 cross member under my 66. So these rotors will work on my setup to keep 6 lug. Thanks ps I just had two drill one hole and make two a little larger to mount the cross member.

I still have drum brakes on my 62 C10, so can get the rotors and calipers off of a 88 and put them right on or is there other mods I have to do?

Unfortunately, you still have to upgrade to a disc brake setup. I recommend taking the entire K-member off of a '70-'71. It'll bolt right up. What this thread refers to is converting a 5-bolt to a 6 bolt w/out having to buy aftermarket parts.
