ah ok. I finally understand. So how hard is it to take the entire K-member off will it bolt right on. and if I do that I will have springs up front and I can take off the torsion bars

Oh yeah if I switch the k-member will the schocks still mount the same way or do I have to put new schock mounts on the frame?

Swapping a K-member is not that difficult. It's freakin' heavy, tho. I don't think you have to modify the shock mounts. Anybody feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but the only major modification that I know of is that you have to drill a couple of holes in the frame to mount the sway bar.
I'm using the K-member from a '79. I've heard conflicting reports. Some say that post-'71 front-ends are 3" wider than the previous years. Others say they're the same. It doesn't really matter in my case because I got the front-end and rear-end off of the same truck so they match.

If you plan on changing out the upper or lower A-arm bushings, I strongly recommend just taking them to a shop. Removing and installing those things is an absolute bear. Take 'em somewhere where they have a hydraulic press.

Hi guys, was just reading this whole thread and I am a little confussed. I just bought a 66 chevy and want to do the disc brake swap but also want to drop it. So if I buy lets say 3" drop spendles and want to keep my 6 bolt rims I can use rotors off a 1988 3/4 ton 2wd pickup? (does it matter who is the maker of the spindles) Can I also use the calipers, master cylinder and everything else off the same pick up? Also what if I only dropped it 2 inches using drop springs, would the 88 truck stuff fit on my exisisting spindles? I'm thinking not because the exsisting spindles wouldnt have the attaching points for the calipers and all that?? I know thats alot of questions but I'm new to this and don't want to go buy stuff that doesnt work.

I installed a dropped spindle disc brake ( 6 lug) convertion set up on my 1960 truck. I purchased the setup from CPP. Unfortionaly my original 15 inch steel rims did not work, the caliper rubs inside the inner outer part of the wheel. I tried another set of later model wheels from 60-66 and they also rub. Looks like I am gonna have to buy after market wheels....dang.

My understanding is that 3/4 tons are 8 lug so they won't work and I would also assume that the spindles are made heavier on a 3/4 ton for more hauling and all that.
Now as far as the years of rotors that you can use are anywhere from 72-87. These models of rotors are what most drop spindles for a 62-66 are made for. You can get either 5 lug or 6 lug from about any supplier. If you want to go budget, go down to AutoZone or one of those places, you can get the rotors and the calipers and all the stuff and it will cost you about $200 bucks.
To answer the question about the front cross member. You will get the disk brakes with it, but if you are going to lower it, you will end up having to rebuild alot of the front end as far as ball joints and everything anyways. The big advantage is there is a large improvement in the stearing and suspension geometry.

What I have read and understand is that regular spindles made for this truck and drop spindles are made for just 71-87 rotors.

Well guys I got the new new 73-87 front end sand blasted and painted and bolted in.... yeah!!! still gotta to finish hookin stuff up then to finish the body and get it back on the road I'll try to post a pic tomarrow showing the frontend bolted in HECK YA!!!!!

i have done the switch to disc brakes. i have the new 6 lug rotors what i am having problems with is my calipers off the 79 wont fit the rotors. what year caliper do i need?
