I replaced the bed wood and metal strips in my '64 chevy fleetside and it took me a total of 10 hours, including waterproofing the wood and painting the new strips and bolts. The only adjustments I had to make was to drill a couple of the bolt holes that connected to the main frame (so everything lined up okay), and cutting a couple of notches in the wood where the boards met the bed, back by the tailgate on each side. I had to use bolt cutters and a sawzall to cut all the old bolts from the original cross-beams under the bed, since the original nuts and bolts were rusted together. It was a very rewarding experience. Keith

www.trucksusa.net/Good place for your stainless/steel bed strips, bolt kits, and bed wood. I actually used to work there, and spent a little time polishing and packaging bed strips. Great guy that runs the place.

nice ride bigrig!
Most trucks I've seen seem to be oak beds.
thanks to original poster for this info as I will likely be replacing my wood box next summer so this info will come in very handy in preparation for that.

so I just bit the bullet the other day and bought some beautiful red oak to replace my truck bed with. Still need to buy the polished stainless steel bed strips and bolt hardware....Still need to decide how dark I should stain the wood, probably won't go too dark so there is a nice contrast with the body color of my truck. I will update with photos in a month or 2 when it is all completed.
