I am currently working on restoring two c10 short stepside trucks. One is a 1964 and the other is a 1969.
I am planning on saving money by cutting my own bed wood from stock white oak lumber. I was wondering if there are better hardwood options for this application? And what kind of stain or sealer to use on the wood?
I'm also open to custom ideas or tips from people that have accomplished this before.
Tahnks,
Jake

The bed wood in my '65 stepside came form MAR-K in Oklahoma, and I used Spar Urethane clear on it. It came out real nice, (10 coats).

White oak is a good choice. Have you looked at the bed kits from LMC?

A friend of mine used a solid piece of lumber that was made from multiple boards. Like would be used for furniture, like a table top. The individual boards that the piece was made of were about 8" wide. He cut it to fit (shortbed) then stained it. Put it in the truck and placed a stainless strip (not a truck bed strip, just narrow stainless stock) on each of the seams, drilled it and bolted it down. Looks great and is on the cheap. Sorry but I don't have any pictures.
