I have a 66 C10 with a I6 250 and replaced the starter and it's really sensitive and hangs if I don't gently bump the key. Any clues on getting the starter to kick out earlier and keep from engaging long than necessary ?

Were there any shims between the starter and block, when you took the old one off? If you have a manual trans with a three bolt starter, this does not apply.

There were no shims, I considered putting them in, everyting I read says this would make it worse. I oiled to key and this helps a little, I am wondering if it's just the key/ignit spring.

That is not a starter you can shim. Do you have a working ignition switch you can try? Borrow a friends. del
