I inherited a 66 Chevy truck that had the engine replaced on it about 10 years ago. The engine cast number is 3850817 and below is GM an "M" inside a square with a 3 beside it. Above that number I found another number 4485F2 and on the exhaust manifold is 3859381 with GM 15 below it. It is an inline 6. I'm trying to find out the c.i. and whether it has hardened valve seats to prevent engine damage from burning today's unleaded fuel. I've been told the engine has only about 500 miles on it. The truck has been sitting in a field for the past 10 years. I'm brand new to the classic world and I want to restore it. Can anyone give me some advice?

This number 3850817 is a 62-79 250cid block, what is the head number??. If you're worried about the seats just use some lead substitute!...

Thanks, riverracer. I hope to go pick the truck up in a couple of weeks. I'll try to find the head number then. Sorry I don't have much background in this. Is there a certain place the head number is usually located?

Been a long time since I messed with these, but if I recall right it'll be under the valve cover in the center by the clock???

OK. I saw it for the first time in about 20 years a couple of weeks ago. What I have done so for is get it out of the holes it had sunk into over the past 6-8 years and got it on some aired up tires. I drained a little of what should have been the oil from the pan and caught it in a jar. Smelled like varnish and was too thin to be just oil. Had to leave it and come back home to go to work but got my wife to take some pictures. I'm new to the forum world. I saw may be you or 3onthetree had posted a picture of their engine on another thread. How do you do that? I'd like to show ya'll a picture of this mystery engine.

You can upload a pic right from your computer, re size your pics to 700x700 max, then under the smilies hit the "Browes" button and find your file then post it, or you can host it on ImageShack and just link to it!...

well look-a-there riverracer-you can teach an old dog at least part of a new trick under the hood and on the computer. Now if I can remember how to do it again next time. I'll keep referencing this threat as the recipe. I'll give you an update next time I get a chance to see the truck. Thanks again. I sure am glad you guys are out there and willing to share your experience with a newbie.
Thanks Again,
