I'm going with the 700R4 for the mileage, of course a GearVendors is not totally out of the question!..

700r4 is the standard by which overdrive 4 speed automatics are judged because they are 80's era, available, mostly mechanically controlled and stout! We've had a couple of 4L60e's in the family and spent big $$ on overhauls (not a big fan of these) Got a 4L80e in my dually, and the thing is HUGE! Good so far! The 4L transmissions are 90's era electronic control, which means I may never have one in any vehicle except where it was originally.

Main reason I'm going with the 700R4, they're simple and cheap to rebuild, and they are small and easy to install!..

I have to say its all about application if your putting down big power your gas mileage is probably gone with it TH400 is great from my experence with it the 700r is great for the highway daily driver. Depends on build the 700r can be a tough S.O.B as well.

I am a preservationist/stocker, so I prefer the factory 2-speed automatic Powerglide, not because it is the best performer, but because it was available as an option on the 4-5-6 Chevy trucks.

I voted other. I like manuals in these truck. I currently have a saginaw 3speed with a borg warner OD. my other choice is a 5 speed
I like the 3 speed with OD mainly for keeping the stock column shift style but have the OD for highway use

the low first gear and high gear in overdrive make the 700r the king
