The turn signal handle on my '64 c10 pickup will rotate from the normal position up to the 12 0'clock position and down to the 6 o'clock position. Would replacing the entire switch mechanism correct this, or has something broken loose in the actual steering column shaft? I would like to know before I order any parts. The truck is over a month past due on its inspection.

Remove the horn button, steering wheel and you will be able to see the turn signal mechanism. I suggest replacing this assembly because the plastic becomes brittle and they fail. You can get them from several of these aftermarket truck suppliers: www.bowtiebits.comwww.lmctruck.comwww.classicparts.comwww.truckandcarshop.comwww.oldchevytrucks.comand many others. They will run between $40.00 and $100.00, but I am not sure why there is such a gap in the pricing when they are all the same unit. Make sure you get the assembly for a '64 because there is a difference in the '60-'63 and the 4-5-6 years. I also see them on eBay from time-to-time. Are you referring to the entire switch assembly, or the plastic cams that go with the switch? The blinkers work fine, but I was wanting to stop the middle section (between the steering wheel and the stick shift area, being a three -on-the-tree) from rotating. Thank you so much for your reply: I am just needing a little clarification. Do you believe the rotation of the blinker rod is caused by the plastic breaking in the switch itself? Thanks again.

After removing the steering wheel, you will be able to determine what is damaged and what is allowing the signal lever to rotate. When trouble-shooting this area, I usually go with the full replacement, since it is over 40 years old and I don't want to be back in this area anytime soon.

Here's an update on the problem I was speaking about in the above posts. I pulled the steering wheel and the problem was not with the switch, but the two metal prongs on the steering column sleeve had broken off, allowing the turn signal switch to spin freely. I don't understand how those metal prongs would break before the plastic switch did, but apparently that is what happened. I can't find a replacement part in the American Classic Parts or LMCTRUCK catalogs, so my mechanic is looking for one. The spinning turn signal switch also broke the horn wire under the steering wheel, so we put in a temporary horn button, wired directly to the horn relay, so the truck could pass inspection (which it did).

After further investigation, I am thinking that instead of needing a new sleeve, the two bolts that secure the turn signal switch to the column have worked loose and are missing.
