I have the same problem with my '72 C-10, 307, 3-Speed with 3.73's. For a quick fix that will be cheap and will help a little, go to taller rear tires. I went from 235's to 265/75R/15's. It worked out to be an equivalent to approx 3.63 gears. One drawback tho, my speedometer is off a little now.

wow. I have a 62 with a 283 and saginaw 4 speed and at 55 I am at about 2500 RPM. I just bought a 4 speed M20 Muncie I am going to put in, does that mean I am going to be cruising at higher RPM

If both transmissions are 1:1 in 4th gear then nothing will change with respect to engine rpm in that gear.
