Is it already on a stand? If so, it's really a piece of cake.
1. Disassembly is pretty simple. The most important thing to remember is keeping things organized. Label things, if possible. When you remove the pistons, use metal stamps to number each piston, so they go back in their original cylinders. It IS important. You may want to mark things like the timing chain with a grease pencil so they go back on in the same position. You may even want to take some pictures as you disassemble.
2. Thoroughly clean each part that will be reused. Carburator cleaner and a toothbrush work great. If it's really crusty, you may want to take the parts in and have them dipped.
3. Reassemble the motor in the opposite order of disassembly. Replace ALL rings, gaskets and seals. As long as you know what car the engine came out of, finding the exact parts should be a breeze.
4. You'll want to rescore the cylinders. It's a little tricky, if you've never done it, so you may want to get some help with that.
5. You'll need a ring compression tool to reinsert the pistons. Simply place the compression tool over the rings and tighten. Place the piston in the cylinder and make sure the compression tool seats well. Carefully tap the cylinder into place using a mallet and some type of narrow object.
6. Make sure all contact surfaces, such as between the head and the block or valve seats, are spotless.
That should get you started. I'll try to post more later.
