I have a '61 Chevy Fleetside Pickup and it has been hesitating upon acceleration, again, then ran really rough, bucking and gagging all the way home and now it won't start. It cranks, but that is it. I changed the points and condensor since the points were burned badly. But still no start. Any advice would be appreciated.

Try sprayin carb cleaner in the carb, choke it, and work the gas peddle really fast while cranking it and see if it will it start. You might want to try a carb kit if you have never fiddled with your carb before. Hesitation is usually caused by a lean condition. Also try replacing the rotor button if you havent already, that can cause some fun things to happen as well.

Fuel filter comes to mind.

I tried a fuel filter and still won't start. I removed a spark plug and cranked it, no spark. I replaced the ignition coil, and still no spark. I tested the new coil with a voltmeter and from positive to negative there is alot of juice, from positive to the center of the coil, the needle goes to a little below 10 on the ohm readout. Same with negative to the center. But, from the center of the coil to the center of the distributor, the needle doesn't move. This is all with the key in the start position. Do I need a new resistor? I took that off and the coils inside are fine, not broken or burnt. Where should I go next? Has the ignition switch gone bad? Any advice would be appreciated.

Is it the original engine, or at least one with a coil, see if there is something wrong with the coil if its got one.

I have replaced the coil, the distributor cap, the points and condensor, gapped the points properly, new rotor and still won't start. The starter is fine, I bench tested that. It cranks, but then starts to run down the battery, so I stop cranking. I have set the distributor to be inline with the timing mark, and pulled the #1 sparkplug to see if the piston was up and ready to fire. It is. That is where I am as of now. Any help would be appreciated.

Have you verified that you're getting fuel? Could it be the fuel pump?

i had the same problem and i changed to the pertronix points to hei kit www.pertronix.com/prod/ig/ignitor/default.aspxor take the cap off and have someone crank it and check if the rotor is moving your timing chain could be gone.( i know its a long shot but stranger things have happened. )

I wouldn't hesitate to say your timing gear is stripped. It happened to me, and i had the same symptons as you. If infact it is the problem, and you know your way around an engine, buy a new gear at advanced auto parts and put it on yourself. It won't cost over $90 for the whole project, including a new oil pan gasket. Trust me, i had it done for me and it cost $900. Again, that's only if a stripped gear IS your problem...

To all who have replied, I still have cranking, but no spark. The rotor is turning, the points are set correctly, new distributor cap, new rotor, new coil, starter is working, but again it won't start up. The plugs are wet, so do I check the carburetor? Maybe getting too much gas? How do I fix that? Do I need to adjust the float or anything else inside the carb?
