Okay... I have lots of questions here. For Starters my truck is a 64 C15. It originally came with a 283 and the standard 4 speed granny tranny which Im going to keep for awhile. I just ordered a new long block 327 that was available in the 1966 model year. I plan on putting the motor in over the next couple of days but I have some questions. For starters the harmonic balancer on my current 283 seems to be rather small, but none the less will the same harmonic balancer that worked on the 283 work on the 327? My friend said something about internally balanced and externally balancers and not knowing if the 283 balancer will work???
Im also curious about the clutch. The current clutch in the truck seems to be fine, but if I find out otherwise when I get into everything I will replace it, but if I dont have to, is the current clutch that worked on the original 283 setup going to work, or do I need to buy a clutch for a 1966 327 C15?
Im also curious if Im going to run into any other hang-ups in the process of trading the 283 to a 327 (both blocks are from the same era).
I also purchased all new external components. water, oil, fuel pumps, intake manifold, carb, pretty much everything will be new except for the alternator and it appears to have been recently replaced as well.

Im not sure on the balancer but your friend is right about internally balanced and externally balanced. you need to find out what balancer the 327 uses. And your clutch should work with the 327. Since they are around the same year. When I went from my 250 inline 6 to my 1985 305 V8, I had to run a 305 fly and clutch for that motor. because the 305 is a one piece rear main. and the six banger had a 2 piece rear main and a smaller clutch.

If both blocks are from the same year, then every external component is interchangeable. I believe the only small block Chevy V8 that is an internally balance assembly is the sbc 400. Try Summit, Jegs or your local auto parts store for a harmonic balancer for your 327.
Before purchasing any parts, I would run the casting number of your 327 block to determine the accurate year, application and displacement. This will ensure you are purchasing and installing the correct parts for your application.
Good luck and keep us posted with your project.
