I'm sure some people have this same problem, so I'm curious as to how you fix this problem. My hood has the little rust holes on that little lip that seals against the grill support. Know what I'm talking about? I'm going to braze the rust holes shut, but how do you get rid of the rust that runs in that crack on the underside of the hood? Just use a lot of rust reformer?

I think I get what you mean. As far as the holes are concerned if you can weld them up with out blowing through thats what I would do. If the metal is too thin to weld affectivly I would cut the area out and make a patch. Now with the rust under neath, Ive never used the rust converting stuff before, if it was mine I would try to sand it out, or find someone who is very talented with a sand blaster that will not mess your hood up.

I've got a sandblaster, but like you said, if those areas are real rusty...it could turn ugly quick. But if that did happen...like you said again, I can just make patch panels for them. That's probably what I'll try next...right now I'm trying to get the hood stripped and then I'll be trying the sand blaster. Thanks!

My hood is very bad. Can you replace that panel versus replacing the whole hood? If so, can anyone help with locating the part? I have been looking but cannot locate. Thanks for any help.

Which panel are you refering to stache? As far as finding anything aftermarket for these hoods, were pretty much outta luck. As far as I know all you can get is turn signal stuff.

Not sure it is really a panel, but on the front of the hood, the section that holds the parking lights. I was kinda hoping there was a replacement panel for it because the rest of the hood is pretty good. Last night I did find a fiberglass hood for $499 on A-Z restoration site.

Yeah, I know what your talking about. Thats where most of these hoods rust at. I have only seen one of those panels cut out of a hood one time on ebay and no one remakes them. If you live out west you should be able to find one in junk yard or some one on here might have one. If you are on the east coast like me, well your in for a hard time. It took me a long time to find a good rust free hood. I have another hood that I bought but, it has some rust like yours but its not bad. You should be able to find a steel hood and even if it needs work you will have less then 500 in it.

Whether you find the extent of the rust by sandblasting, sanding or attempting to weld, it is in your best interest to eliminate as much as possible, before commencing the repairs or it will reappear later after you have done all the work to repair it. Sandblasting is the best method because it exposes, not only the rust, but also the areas that have been thinned by the process. If you don't remove the rust by sandblasting, you will be chasing holes when attempting to weld in patches.
I am from the midwest, the salt capital of the US, and we are still able to find good rust-free hoods in this area. I am not sure where you are located, but I can help you with a good, used, rust-free hood, depending on where you are located. You might try posting in the parts wanted forum for more results.
