My '62 came stock with a 235 inline. I originally wanted to have it rebuilt, but I now have an opportunity to get a completely rebuilt 250 inline six from my brother-in-law for cheap. He is taking it out of '68 Chevy Biscayne. What do you think? Is the 235 or the 250 a better engine?

I like them both. But remember, the stock bell housing on the 235 will not fit on the 250.

Good to know, thanks. I should be getting the complete engine and maybe the tranny, so hopefully I won't have any major install issues.

250- modern era, smaller, lighter and unchanged thru 1981... replaced the previous era (235) engine. The 194, 230,250, and 292 sixes share bellhousing pattern, flywheels, starter mounting and engine mount placement with the v-8 engine family. This is why a v-8 is a bolt-in in a 63 and newer pickup that originated with a six.

Parts are available for both, but it seems to me that the later engines (194-292) are a little bit cheaper. Also sharing things with the V8 family of engines makes some parts much more available and cheaper too. I've got a 230 in my 64 and I'm happy with it. It's getting a T5, some split headers, and maybe an aluminum intake and cam. I'm looking to maximize fuel efficiency with this truck and hopefully keeping the little six will help.

In my 66 GMC van, the stock 230 with stock exhaust and 1 barrel carb and 3 spd manual trans did mid 17's in the q-mile on n/50/15 tires
