I just pickup up a '65 and the seller did not know exactly what the motor in the truck is. Anyone know how to decode the number on the block just behind the water pump? It looks to be a small block Chevy but would like to know year and anything else I can find out.
Number on Pad is: VO527CUB

Here's a breakdown for ya:
V = Assembled in Flint, MI 0527 = Date assembled. (May, 27th) CUB = Designates year and size of engine.
If you can get me the casting date (located on driver side rear of block on flange forward of bellhousing; ex: E038), I can get you the year and size.

Thanks Dave I tried to get to the casting number but with the engine in the truck can't quite get to it to see it. I'll try harder this weekend when I get dirty doing some serious degreasing.
Looks like the CUB designates either a 75 or 77 350 or an 80 305 from some info I found on the Internet tonight.
