OK I got this rearend out of a 66 C10. It has numbers on the case:GM15,3856525 with a N above it and the Vin# is C154 - 6Z137529. I know american classic has the decoder but can these numbers tell me the ratio of the rearend without removing the cover? thanks!

I haven't been on here in quiet awhile but let me see if this will help you.
REAR AXLE IDENTIFICATION:
The production code number contains prefix letters and production date numbers. Axle identification is stamped on the differential carrier along with the date of manufacture.
Example: HB 0612 HB = 3.07:1 ratio, O6 = month built (June), 12 = day built(12th)
If your rearend came out from under a 66 C10, that tells me its a 1/2 ton truck and there are only three factory gear ratios for a 1/2 ton pickup, 3.07:1, 3.73:1 and 4.11:1. Here are the codes for each one.
JQ-4.11:1 HF-3.73:1 These are the only codes my book uses for 66 rearends HA-3.73:1 HG-3.73:1 HB-3.07:1 HH-4.11:1 HC-3.73:1 HQ-3.73:1 HD-4.11:1

Any numbers you find will be as it was delivered from the factory, gears could have been changed thru the years!..

hopefully you haven't cracked it open yet. the easiest way to check gear ratios is to jack up one side of your rear end and with the transmission in neutral spin the tire thats in the air. now count how many times the u-joint on your rear end spins for one revolution of the tire. about 3 and 3/4 times = 3.73 just over four times = 4.11 this should get you right.

How do you identify whether or not you have a posi? This is my first chevy (I've had plenty of fords) and I really don't know alot about them.

zor, just jack up the rearend / get both rear wheels off the ground. with tranny in neutral, spin one of the rear wheels. if they both spin forward you got a posi.
