Hi,
I have a clean 66 and looking to plunk the body on a sweet 86 frame with disc brakes, PS, posi rear, nice 350, turbo 400. Outside of the typical fabracating,, how much body mount work is needed? Anyone done this?

I wish I knew more about later models. bigdog knows more about Chevy trucks than anyone I know. Unfortunately, he's not on the forum very often. You may want to just send him a Personal Message. If anyone can help you, he can.

Well, I compared it to my 73 which is the same and it would be a major project, cab mounts are way off, wheel base is different, I quit there!.. My donor is a 72 and so far it looks like close to a bolt on deal, so far all I found was the frame brackets for the radiator support is different, but I figure I can use the ones off the 66. Still have to do some more measuring though, if I can ever get the dang time!...

Hi,
Being a fabricator most of these are not real issues for me. I have compared the wheel bases and the 84 is 2" longer,, simply move the rear leaf spring brackets and 3 " wider.
I think I can live with the width as its only 3" ( 1 and1/2" on each side).
As for mounts that pretty straight forward. I'm going to moc the whole truck up and see how things work out. I guess I should record it and post it somewhere as no one (seems like) has ever done this.

Ok,
The bad news is its a job to put a 60's body on a 73 and up frame. The good news is any 67-72 frame is a bolt on deal. Remember, if you want leaf springs it needs to be a GMC frame. almost any 67-72 chevy or gmc will have PS PB Disk but only GMC's have leafs. I will be posting some pics in a log I am keeping.

I just put a 65 SWB Body on a 76 SWB chassis, let me warn you it will be much easier to let your 86 be a donor for all the late model components you want. Looking back now at all the headache, cost, and fabrication involved in that body/frame swap I'll never do it again. Good luck Junkhandler59

i dont know if this has been answered yet but i can clear this up 73-87 frames are a different animal the frame jumps up under the seat so to set the cab on the frame in the rear it could put the front about 8"higher it would look like crap. my freind did a 69 on a 78 4x4 frame the valve covers could be seen under the grill.ulgy .mine is a 65 ish on a 71 ish 4x4 frame with a 6 inch lift with a d44 and a 14 bolt and a turbo diesel this the only frame swap that can work well

Well, one option you could do is that the engine cradles will swap or at least come very close with little modification, so there you have your more modern front suspension just on the older frame. Unless you want leaves in the back, you could just swap the rear ends and run the trailing arms. This would work, you would have the majority of what you want it would just be on the older frame rails and trailing arms in the back.

I may not have understood the question/goal. If you want leaf springs in the back, a 65 one ton frame has that. You can use a 14 bolt chevy with or without duals and can have almost any gear ratio you want. If you want A frame, you can have that. If you want 4wd you can have that. All modern conviences can be added fairly easily, PS, PB, AC, Auto....
