My dad just told me that the engine in my '65 isn't an original. He said he burned his out the first year he had it. He has no knowledge of engines whatsoever and i really want to know if its a 292 or not. I don't know if anyone can tell by a picture but just in case i'll put it up here. After school tomorrow i'm going to take a look at it and check under the distributor cap like you said Dave to see if it says what it is. Please help if you know. I'm also going to put a cherry bomb glasspack on it tomorrow c20 crewcab.

If that distributor is the original for that motor then it's a 74 or later, that's when HEI's came out, but it could be an older motor and someone replaced the point deal with an HEI!. You won't find anything under the cap, you need to get the casting numbers off the block and check here!.. Casting Numbers

No idea where they are on 6's.

Alright, a lot of stuff went down last night. I found the numbers, on the right side of the engine next to a sweet looking GM symbol. I matched the numbers to ones on a casting numbers list (thankyou Riverracer) and i have finally discovered....... drum roll please....... It's a 292! I am the happy 15 year old alive right now! I then preceeded to chop off the exhaust system right at the back of the cab. I went and bought a glasspack called Thrush, which is basically a cherry bomb, but then i realized the engine sounds so cool i dont want to put it on yet! I'm to take a video of the sound today and post it on you tube.
Thank you so much to all of you that have helped me and given me pointers!!

Thats a 250 NOT a 292 The 292 had largeer lifter covers and also the fuel pump was located halfway between the oil filter and starter. The 292 also used a different motor mount with a raised ridge!!

A 292 will have 6" tall side covers and the fuel pump will be to the rear of the passenger side motor mount. The other six cylinder motors of this era will have smaller side covers and the fuel pump will be in front of the passenger side engine perch.
