My 65 Chevy is almost ready for the road, but I have a problem with the steering, it's very loose. When going around a corner I would have to really turn it and sometimes it would be unresponsive for half a rotation or more. Do I need to replace the whole steering colum or is something simply loose?
I can get a whole new one for $500 with turning siginal installed and everything, but if I can fix this for less than that, I would rather take that road. Any suggestions?

Check the rag joint too. Being that old it's probably a worn out steering gear box.

I second the rag joint. I had similar symptoms that came on all at once, right before mine broke and I lost all steering. Luckily I was turning a corner slowly with no other traffic and was able to get off the road!

Stop. First thing to check is if the steering box play can be adjusted. There is a 5/8 nut with an odd looking stud coming out on top with a slot for a screwdriver to fit in. This is an adjusting nut for the worm gear. Loosen the retaining nut a half to 3/4 turn while holding the slotted stud in place. Once loosened turn the slotted stud clockwise a full turn or so and recheck the play in your wheel. Do this untill all the play except for about 1/2 to 1 inche is obtained. Retighten the lock nut.

If the steering wheel has, like he says, a half rotation of free play in it, I vote for the rag joint theory.

I think if it had that much play from the rag it would be broken, it probably is worn though but I'll bet the steering box needs adjusted, mine had a ton of play in when I got it!..
