Been a Mopar guy most of my life, though I have owned several other brands. My favs other than a long list of Mopars include a 66 Chevelle SS, 74 Camaro, 91 Mustang 5.0 LX and my last being a 56 oval/ragtop VW Bug.
When I was in high school a buddy of mine had a 64 GMC short bed/big back window running a 396 4speed. As soon as I saw that black primered truck pull into the parking lot I loved it!! I know we all have those stories of some guy with some car and thats what got us started.
I have never owned that short bed, big back window truck yet but I did break down about 15 years ago and for $600 got a 65 fleetside long bed. Came with a 327 and 3 on the tree. Worst shift linkage ever made, imo. Got tired of pretending I enjoyed driving it and tore it apart. Sold the engine and trans for $400 since I didn't need them I had a fresh rebuilt 383 and trans sitting in the garage... oh thats a 383 Chrysler!!
Sand blasted the frame and body. Cleaned and painted all the suspension components. Installed dropped spindles, I think 3 and 5 inch lowered springs and then cut the body mounts and put the body on the frame. Picked up some steel wheels (had them made back them 15x10 for the rears) and chrome caps, running N50's in the rear and prolly 165's up front. Used extra set of wheel wells to widen the old ones, looked factory that way. Installed a rear rollpan.
Ran in some issues with the engine trans location because of the crossmember and oil pan not getting along. So I moved it back about 5 inches, cut the fire wall and made a new one. Other body mods included filled dash, all autometer gauges, filled all the trim molding holes, cut the front bumper and brackets and made it near flush to the body (that I liked the best!)
Got the body mounted and the bed mounted. After seeing how it was coming together I couldn't wait to get that front end on. The top of the rim on the rear wheel was way up inside the wheel well. I think when I measured from rollpan to floor it was around 8.5 inches.
Got the front end on, bumper on and sweet!! About 6 inches off the ground. Couldn't wait to drive this thing over speed bumps LOL.
Unfortunately I ended up selling the truck for two reasons, one bought my first house and wife wanted new carpet and the what nots. Second I really loved the way it looked and the chrysler power and all the hard work I put in it but I just didn't like the truck. It wasn't a short bed and it didn't have a big back window. It's like buying a straight six 69 Camaro because you love the 69 z/28.. yeah its a Camaro but it aint the same. Not that I'm saying there is something wrong with long beds, or step sides, I'm just saying that this truck just wasn't going to "keep" me happy.
So now I'm looking again. Lots, and I mean lots of longbeds out here where I live. Not much for short beds. Found one for $1500 that I have to check out. Small block, auto, lowered a touch, old factory light blue/rust/primer paint theme like almost all of them. Small back window.. but hey that can be fixed
See how it goes. Hope to a regular on here.
