I have a 64 short bed (now step-side) with a 283 engine and a 3.73 rear. I want to trade out the Power-glide transmission to a 700R4. I've heard there are a few particular year models for the transmission that are easier to install in an older vehicle. If that is true what years are they? I've also heard that additional parts are required internal to the transmission so that the overdrive will lockup. If that is true, what are they and can someone with less than a PhD. in transmissions install them? I already know that the drive shaft length and possibly the yoke must be checked. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As snipe asks, what years should we be looking for? I've seen them with four wires going in but what do we do with those wires? I've also seen them with two wires for speed sensing and apparently we can do some thing to change it over to cable drive. Big question is, "What years are best and easiest?"

www.bowtieoverdrives.com/index.shtmlwww.transmissioncenter.net/?gclid=CKj78szntbMCFal7QgodIk0A_gThese two places will cover what you`ll need to do..any 700r4 `88 and up are better, be advised that if you are using the engine mounts that are in the rear holes ( mount to crossmember ) you`ll need to trim the lower seam on the fire wall approx 6 inches, three each way of center, that will be the only place that will have interferance, if you move the motor foward you`ll have other issues.
