Hi everyone, just got a 66 long bed. the last owner chopped the front springs in front and man does she ride ruff, like not having any springs at all. I want to replace the springs with new ones and use 3" drop spindles and also drop the rear 5 ". Also want to add disc brakes and power steering. Also a automatic trans but am thinking about keeping the straight 6(any thoughts on that?) I am totally new to this and have tons of questions. If anyone has any words of wisdom feel free to send them to me, lol Looks like you guys know tons about this. love this site

Welcome. I recommend finding the entire front suspension out of a 73-87 chev pu. Drop spindles should be easier to obtain and other parts will be easier to get in the future. Some one makes a kit to bolt the newer steering box on your frame rails. Note this will change the front to 5 bolt, there are ways around this too in another thread I do not know how to link to. A 66 should have a 250 or a 292 (not a 235, witch has a dif bellhousing) witch share the same bell housing as a v8. The flex plate (fly wheel) 85 or older (not the 400 or 454) will also bolt up, just use the starter that goes with the flex plate.

I've been doin some reading and it seems like most ppl agree with you that thats the best way to go,,, one question though will that front end be wider and if so will it be wide enough that it will be visible to ppl that see it?

Mine is a 3/4 ton and I used a hybrid suspension. Did not know it was posible to swap K members at the time (now I wish I had). So I retained the 66 K member and lower control arms (with 79 ball joints), and everything else is 79. The width turned out fine.
DISCLAIMER, I am working with a 3/4 ton (as far suspension parts goes, no part inter change, 3/4 to 1/2 ton, but they fit under the same fenders) and stock suspension heights (be it for a 79).
